FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 and Task 2?
Task 1 (150 words, ~20 minutes) requires you to describe, summarise or explain visual information (such as a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, process diagram or map) using clear, objective and academic language.
Task 2 (250 words, ~40 minutes) requires you to write a formal, structured essay responding to a prompt, argument or problem, presenting a clear position with supporting evidence and logical paragraphing. Task 2 carries twice as much weight towards your total Writing score as Task 1.
Will I lose marks in the IELTS Writing test for going over or under the word count?
While the official word penalty for writing under 150 words (Task 1) or 250 words (Task 2) was removed in recent marking guidelines, writing significantly fewer words almost always means you have failed to fully address the task or develop your ideas adequately.
Aim for 160–180 words for Task 1 and 260–290 words for Task 2 to demonstrate depth without running out of time or making careless grammar errors.
Can I memorise essays or pre-written phrases for the IELTS Writing test?

No. IELTS examiners are trained to identify memorised templates, formulaic linkers and unnatural vocabulary. If an examiner suspects a memorised response, your Task Achievement score will be severely penalised. Focus instead on mastering flexible essay structures, varied sentence construction and natural vocabulary and tone appropriate to the prompt and overall suitable to the writing context.

Should I choose IELTS Paper-Based or IELTS Computer-Delivered
Both formats have identical content, timing, question types and scoring standards, but the test delivery differs:
Computer-Delivered: Fast results (usually within 1 to 5 days), typing is easier for essay editing and you hear audio through individual headphones.
Paper-Based:  Results take 13 days; preferred by candidates who like physically underlining paper texts or writing notes by hand.
In the Listening test, do I get extra time to transfer my answers?

It depends on your format. In the Paper-Based test, you get 10 minutes at the end of the audio recording to transfer your handwritten notes to the official answer sheet. In the Computer-Delivered test, you enter your answers directly on screen during the test and only receive two minutes at the end to review your work.

Can I combine scores from two different IELTS test sittings for Australian Teacher Registration?

Combining scores across sittings depends entirely on the policy of your state or national registration authority (such as AITSL, QCT, NESA or VIT). Some authorities accept two test sittings within a 6-month or 12-month window, provided minimum threshold scores are met in each sitting, while others require all target scores in a single sitting. Always verify the current guidelines directly with your registration body.
